Plug-In-Reef is a new German brand and product that will soon be launched on the market. It consists of modular building blocks that can be used to create plastic reef structures. Reefkeepingtoday has the exclusive.
At the NordRiff trade show, developer and business owner Michael Skibbe is showcasing his product. “Plug-In-Reef has been in development for three years,” he explains. “There are various building blocks that, when combined, form an open or closed reef structure. Although there are assembly instructions, aquarists can let their imaginations run wild. Thanks to the many different block types—each with its own number—the possibilities are endless.”
It’s a bit like Lego, but without the typical “studs.” Plug-In-Reef, instead, uses stainless steel pins to hold the blocks together. The blocks have a rough surface, which encourages calcareous algae growth. Fish can swim through the structure, but there are also closed versions that are completely solid. The blocks are made of reef-safe PETG.
The plan is to offer complete, ready-to-use reef structures, as well as the blocks separately. The blocks cost between 2 and 12 EUR. Large reef structures will cost around 200 EUR, while smaller ones will cost around 160 EUR. Plug-In-Reef will be available on the website within about three weeks.
