A few weeks ago, B-SPX launched the Gravity, a new generation of LED fixtures that promises to disrupt the market. At least, that’s the promise. The Gravity LED fixture stands out thanks to its tiltable design, which makes it easy to direct the light even into the darkest corners of the aquarium. We got our hands on one. Here are our first impressions.
In early August, we reported (Dutch version only) that B-SPX had designed a new light fixture: the Gravity. With this, the German company is making its foray into the ever-expanding market of high-tech lighting solutions for saltwater aquariums. The Gravity is available in five models, ranging from 30 to 180 watts. We’re testing the Gravity 22—the 60-watt model.
Construction
The box comes with a power supply, a controller, and, of course, the fixture itself. It is equipped right out of the box with the flexible ball joint and mounting plate, which is the fixture’s unique selling point. This plate is made of anodized aluminum, providing a premium finish. The ball joint is made of polymer and allows the lamp to rotate 360° and tilt 20°. This makes it extremely easy to adjust the lighting as coral growth progresses. The entire unit feels sturdy and comes with a 3-meter-long cable that is connected in a waterproof way to the controller.
Our model features four LED clusters that are fully integrated behind optic white glass and are distributed across five channels: 6800K white, 435–475 nm royal blue, 405–445 nm actinic, pink, and cyan. All channels are controlled via a Dynamic Power Control mode, which can provide up to 50% more power to one or more channels at the expense of others. There is no separately adjustable UV channel because B-SPX permanently links UV-A to the white channel. As a result, the UV component increases or decreases in the same proportion as the white channel is adjusted, just as it does in nature.

Above the reef tank
Users have the option to purchase various mounting systems separately. We chose the L-bracket. It is a simple system that securely holds the fixture in place using just a few parts.
The bracket is once again made of anodized aluminum. The fixture simply rests between the rails of the mounting system, preventing it from slipping out while still allowing it to be moved quickly. Two screws—topped with plastic protective caps—secure the system firmly against the aquarium glass.
The result is a sleek finish that we really like, and above all, it’s easy to set up.
First Use
The B-SPX Gravity is ready for use and will soon be up and running above the new Reefkeepingtoday tank. We’re looking forward to the full test. Expect a detailed review in a few weeks!
