Seiche, a British company specializing in underwater acoustics and marine environmental monitoring, announces the establishment of a new Maritime Science and Technology division. Seiche’s marine research division brings together the company’s internal expertise in marine ecology, bioacoustics, and technological innovation under one umbrella.
Three experts are appointed to lead the department: Lorenzo Scala as head of marine sciences, Chris Pierpoint as head of bioacoustics, and Robert Lee as head of technological innovation.
The growing demand for accurate measurements of the underwater environment in combination with stricter regulations regarding the construction of offshore wind farms and the protection of marine life are a driving factor here. Under the new structure, Scala’s team focuses on scientific research into the impact of noise pollution on vulnerable ecosystems. Pierpoint’s department analyzes the sounds made by cetaceans and seals and designs technology to better map marine fauna. Lee, in turn, oversees the development of new hardware, advanced sensors, and automated monitoring systems.
Although Seiche operates primarily in the offshore sector, its expertise in water quality, sound waves, and the behavior of marine organisms touches on topics that are also relevant to the saltwater aquarium hobby. The advanced sensor and measurement technologies the company develops to closely monitor natural marine ecosystems and their animal inhabitants share strong parallels with the physics and biology required to maintain the stability of complex closed-system saltwater aquariums. Consequently, with the new centralized department, Seiche aims to further shorten the link between field observations in the ocean and scientific data analysis.
